About

Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643) was an Italian composer who bridged the Renaissance and Baroque eras. He is regarded as one of the founders of opera; his L'Orfeo (1607) is among the earliest operas still performed today. He served as maestro di cappella in Mantua and later in Venice, producing a vast body of sacred and secular music.
