About

Les Indes galantes is a ballet héroïque by Jean-Philippe Rameau to a libretto by Louis Fuzelier, first performed on 23 August 1735 at the Palais-Royal in Paris. It consists of a prologue and four self-contained entrées set in exotic lands - Turkey, Peru, Persia and North America - all united by the theme of love across cultural divides. One of the cornerstones of French Baroque music theatre, the work gained a new global audience after a landmark 2019 production at the Opéra Bastille in which choreographer Bintou Dembélé fused Rameau's score with hip-hop and krump, sparking a viral sensation and a wave of stagings worldwide.
