Joseph Alessi (born September 20, 1959, in Detroit) is an American trombonist of Italian descent who has held the principal trombone chair of the New York Philharmonic since 1985. He trained at the Curtis Institute of Music and joined the Juilliard School faculty in 1986, where his students have gone on to fill principal positions in major orchestras worldwide. His 1999 recording of George Crumb's Star-Child won a Grammy Award, and in 1992 he gave the world premiere of Christopher Rouse's Trombone Concerto - a work that received the Pulitzer Prize the following year.
