International jazz project featuring American saxophonist John Shannon alongside Bulgarian and Slovak musicians. Experimental jazz in Prague.
John Shannon is an American guitarist from Pittsburgh and a Berklee College of Music graduate who works across jazz, improvised music, and world music. He studied with Mick Goodrick and Wayne Krantz, has performed with Hiromi Uehara and Reggie Watts, and since 2019 co-owns the Pittsburgh jazz club Con Alma. His trio Waking Vision features Slovak drummer Martin Valihora and Bulgarian bassist Peter Slavov; in October 2025 he released his first straight-ahead jazz album, A Day in Tarifa, on French label Jazzbook Records.
The jazz magazine Jazz Weekly reviewed the album A Day in Tarifa and highlighted Shannon's pure, fluid sound in the Andalusian mode of the title track.
The magazine Jazz Guitar Today published an interview with Shannon about the new album A Day in Tarifa and its connections to the Pittsburgh jazz tradition.
The album A Day in Tarifa was released on October 3, 2025 on CD through the French label Jazzbook Records; the digital edition followed on November 28 and the vinyl on December 5.
Shannon announced a tour in support of the album A Day in Tarifa, which includes stops in Central Europe, Texas, and India.
Waking Vision released their fourth album The Breathing Earth on the Pavian Records label; All About Jazz called it a 'rich sonic tapestry'.
