John Gavin (April 8, 1931 - February 9, 2018), born Juan Vincent Apablasa, was an American actor of Mexican, Chilean and Spanish descent, best known for his roles in Imitation of Life (1959), Psycho (1960), Spartacus (1960) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967). In 1971 he signed a contract to play James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever, but the producers lured Sean Connery back at the last minute - Gavin was still paid his full fee. Beyond acting, he served as president of the Screen Actors Guild (1971-73) and as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico (1981-86), appointed by President Ronald Reagan.
John Gavin died on February 9, 2018 in Beverly Hills at the age of 86 from complications caused by pneumonia.
