About

Janis Joplin (1943-1970) was an American singer whose raw, blues-drenched voice and ferocious stage presence made her one of the defining figures of 1960s rock. She broke through as the frontwoman of Big Brother and the Holding Company at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, then pursued a solo career that culminated in the posthumously released Pearl, which spent nine weeks at number one on the Billboard 200. She died on October 4, 1970, aged 27, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
