George Orwell (1903–1950) was a British author and essayist known for his sharp criticism of totalitarianism and social injustice. His satirical novella Animal Farm (1945) uses a farmyard rebellion as an allegory for the rise of Soviet-style tyranny. His other landmark work is the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.
