George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright, critic, and essayist, one of the most important theatrical writers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His works are known for sharp social satire and witty dialogue. Pygmalion (1913), the story of phonetics professor Higgins and flower girl Eliza Doolittle, became a worldwide stage success and the basis for the musical My Fair Lady.
