David Binney (born August 2, 1961, Miami) is an American alto saxophonist, composer, and producer whose work spans post-bop, avant-garde, and electronic music - earning him three wins in DownBeat magazine's Critics' Poll. He has led or co-led more than 25 albums and appeared on over 400 recordings as a sideman, including as a key creative force behind the ensemble on David Bowie's final album Blackstar. He also teaches at leading institutions worldwide, from The New School in New York to the Paris Conservatoire.
Binney released the EP Morning Preludes (September 5, 2025) - bonus recordings from the session for the album The Isle with drummer Tommy Crane.
David Binney Action Trio performed on August 9, 2025 at Joe Henderson Lab at SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco - a sold-out venue with a capacity of 100 seats.
The album The Isle was released (July 25, 2025), a collaboration between Binney and Montreal drummer Tommy Crane, recorded in Montreal in the summer of 2023.
In April 2025, Binney released the chamber album Grains of Light - a collection of compositions for string orchestra, choir, and saxophone.
In November 2024, Binney performed at Jazz Gallery in New York with pianist Jean Michel Pilce, bassist Eivind Opsvik, and drummer Tim Anglem.
