Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643) was an Italian composer at the transition between the Renaissance and Baroque eras. He is regarded as one of the founders of opera, with L'Orfeo (1607) among the earliest works in the genre still performed today. He also composed madrigals and sacred music, profoundly shaping the course of 17th-century European music.
