Bill Viola is an American video artist whose work has shaped the medium since the 1970s. His large-scale installations use slow-motion imagery, water and fire to explore consciousness, mortality and spiritual transformation, drawing on both Christian iconography and Eastern philosophy. He is one of the most widely exhibited video artists of his generation.
