Arvid Carlsson (1923–2018) was a Swedish pharmacologist and neuroscientist. He demonstrated that dopamine functions as an independent neurotransmitter in the brain and is essential for motor control. His research underpinned the development of treatments for Parkinson's disease, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2000.
