Grabštejn Castle

Chotyně

About the venue

Grabštejn state castle stands on a steep rocky spur above the village of Chotyně, close to the point where the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland meet. The original 13th-century Gothic fortress was transformed into a Renaissance residence between 1564 and 1569 by imperial councillor Georg Mehl von Strelitz, and the castle has largely kept that appearance ever since. The highlight of any visit is the Chapel of St. Barbara, decorated with Mannerist frescoes from the 16th century. After decades of military use and neglect, restoration work began in 1989 and the castle reopened to the public in 1993. It has been a national cultural monument since 2008.
