About the venue
Štvanice island sits in the Vltava between Holešovice and Karlín, taking its name from the animal-baiting events held there in the late 17th century. In 1931, architects Josef Fuchs and Bohumil Steigenhöfer built Czechoslovakia's first ice rink with artificial ice here; the stadium went on to host four ice hockey world championships. The arena was demolished in 2011, while the functionalist café from the same era survives as a listed monument. Today the island is home to a tennis complex that regularly hosts ATP and WTA events, a whitewater slalom canal, and a skatepark.
