Statue of Saint Wenceslas, Wenceslas Square

Prague

About the venue

A bronze equestrian group at the upper end of Wenceslas Square, in front of the National Museum. Sculptor Josef Václav Myslbek spent over thirty years on it (1887-1924), portraying Saint Wenceslas as a warrior on horseback - the model was an army stallion named Ardo. Four Czech patron saints stand around the base: Saint Ludmila, Saint Agnes, Saint Prokop and Saint Adalbert. The group stands 7.2 metres tall and weighs over 5.5 tonnes; it has been a national cultural monument since 1995. Locals meet here "under the tail," and the statue has been the backdrop to key moments in modern Czech history.
