About the venue

Schwesternhäuser Kleinwelka is a listed heritage site in the Upper Lusatia region, in the Kleinwelka district of Bautzen, Saxony. The Herrnhut Brethren (Brüder-Unität) built the six partly Baroque buildings between 1770 and 1896 as a combined residence, workplace and spiritual home for the community's unmarried sisters. The complex has stood empty since 2000 and is in need of restoration; in 2023 Europa Nostra placed it among the seven most endangered heritage sites in Europe. The association Schwesternhaus Kleinwelka e.V. is working to save and repurpose the ensemble for cultural and artistic use.
