The Schwarzenberg Navigation Canal is a national cultural monument in the Šumava mountains, built between 1789 and 1822 to a design by forest engineer Josef Rosenauer at the request of Prince Johann Nepomuk I of Schwarzenberg. The 44 km canal links the Studená Vltava catchment with the Austrian river Große Mühl, crossing the main European watershed between the North Sea and Black Sea drainage basins. Timber was floated along it from 1793 until 1962; near the hamlet of Jelení it passes through a tunnel roughly 400 m long. A 9 km nature trail runs alongside part of the canal, open to walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users, and to cross-country skiers in winter.
