Prague City Tourism - St. Nicholas Church Bell Tower

Prague

About the venue

A late Baroque bell tower from 1755 on Malostranské náměstí, designed by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer and completed by Anselmo Lurago. Despite standing right next to the Church of St. Nicholas, it was always municipal property - the Lesser Town coat of arms above the entrance makes that clear. The tower served as a fire watchtower and town crier's residence, and from the 1960s until 1989 it housed a secret State Security observation post codenamed Kajka. A permanent exhibition now shows the watchman's lodgings with the only accessible black kitchen in Prague; the viewing gallery at 65 m is reached by 215 steps.
