The Bílá labuť (White Swan) department store on Na Poříčí street opened in 1939 and was at the time the largest and most modern department store in Central and Eastern Europe. Designed by architects Josef Kittrich and Josef Hrubý in the functionalist style, the building is instantly recognisable by its vast facade of silver-grey insulating glass. It is listed as a cultural monument and was home to the first escalator in Prague. Today it spans more than ten floors of shops, services and food outlets.
