About the venue

The Gothic hall church of Emmaus Abbey (also known as the Na Slovanech monastery) was founded by Charles IV, who in 1347 brought Croatian Benedictine monks to Prague to celebrate the liturgy in Old Church Slavonic. The church was consecrated on Easter Monday 1372 - the gospel read that day, about Christ's encounter with his disciples at Emmaus, gave the whole complex its name. The interior is decorated in the Beuronese style, while the cloister retains fragments of 14th-century Gothic frescoes. The distinctive concrete twin towers replaced the originals destroyed in the 1945 bombing; the complex has been a national cultural monument since 1978.
