Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie

Česká Skalice

About the venue

A Baroque church in the Malá Skalice quarter, protected as a Czech cultural monument, with roots going back to a chapel recorded in 1350. It took its present form after a rebuilding completed in 1725 by Anna Viktorie, née Liebštejnská z Kolovrat. The church is best known as the place where Božena Němcová married Josef Němec on 12 September 1837. Inside, the carved high-altar by Severin Stolař (1732) and a tin baptismal font from 1490 stand out - the font bears the oldest known written record of the name Česká Skalice. Cannonballs from the 1866 Austro-Prussian War are still visible in the tower and façade.
