Bezděz Castle

Bezděz

About the venue

Bezděz is a large ruin of an early Gothic royal castle perched on a phonolite hill (606 m above sea level) in the Kokořínsko - Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area. King Přemysl Otakar II ordered its construction in the 1260s as a stronghold in northern Bohemia; the main building phase was complete by 1278. The royal palace, castellan's palace, two towers and the remarkable Chapel of St Michael with its cross-vaulted nave have all survived - the chapel ranks among the finest examples of early Gothic architecture in the Czech Republic. The Great Tower offers a panoramic view over the Máchův kraj landscape. The castle is a national cultural monument administered by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ).
