Václav Špála Gallery

Prague

About the venue

Galerie Václava Špály has stood on Národní Avenue in Praha 1 since 1959, when it was named after the Czech painter, graphic designer and illustrator Václav Špála. The space has an even longer exhibition history - a gallery has operated here since 1941, in premises formerly occupied by the Vilímek publishing house and bookshop. Its greatest renown came between 1965 and 1970 under art theorist Jindřich Chalupecký, whose tenure included the only Prague exhibition of Marcel Duchamp. Today the gallery is run by PPF Art and focuses on living Czech artists of the middle generation, showing painting, photography and sculpture.
