Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary - Žatec

Louny

About the venue

The deanery church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands on Hošťálkovo Square in Žatec, on the site of a Romanesque basilica from the first half of the 13th century - the church is documented as early as 1004. A Gothic rebuilding took place in the 14th century with the participation of Peter Parler's workshop, while Baroque alterations added an octagonal chapel of St. John of Nepomuk (1725-1728) and a new façade around 1740. The high altar features early Baroque sculptures by Vít Styrl (1670) and an altarpiece of the Assumption by Prague painter Antonín Stevens (1668). The church is a listed cultural monument and hosts concerts and religious events; it is open to visitors during masses and special occasions.
