The plot revolves around the Cossack Vasyl, who receives an important task - to deliver a letter to the Tsarina in St. Petersburg. Together with the Cossack Andriy, they face many dangers, including evil spirits who have designs on the document. Standing in their way are the Devil and a sorceress who has stolen the letter, and the heroes must now overcome various trials to complete their mission.

Ivan Mykolajčuk was a Ukrainian actor and screenwriter, closely associated with the poetic cinema movement of the 1960s. He became widely known for his role in Sergei Parajanov's Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964). His work drew deeply on Ukrainian folk culture and tradition.
