Copying videos illegally on a mass scale is one thing, but making a marketable product out of them is quite another. Just think of the most basic problem: language – your average customer won’t be a polyglot! The answer to that problem all over Central and Eastern Europe was a practice called rychlodabing, or speed dubbing in Czech, which consisted of one sole actor voicing all characters, with the original voices usually still audible beneath. This is how millions of people in the ČSSR encountered many forms of cinema for the first time in the 1980s, and how many foreign words became lodged (in a corrupted fashion) in everyday language. Some expressions (often curse words) were born. That’s popular culture at its liveliest. Video Kings is an oral history monument to the art of rychlodabing and some of its masters, as well as a collective reminiscence from a time of political transformation, and how ordinary people were agents of that change in extraordinary ways.

Roman Holý is a Czech composer working at the intersection of theatre and music. He created the score for the theatrical production Human Zoo – Gospelová Anarchie, a collaboration with director Viktor Tauš. His work blends theatrical composition with diverse musical genres including gospel.
Miroslav Táborský is a Czech actor known for his work in theatre and film. He has performed at the Divadlo Na zábradlí theatre in Prague and appeared in numerous Czech films and television productions. He is recognized for his natural acting style and sense of humour.
Ondřej Neff (1945–2012) was a Czech writer and journalist, one of the most prominent Czech science-fiction authors. He wrote numerous novels and short stories, including the popular Tučňák series. He also founded Neviditelný pes, the first Czech internet daily newspaper.
Zdeněk Troška is a Czech film director, screenwriter and occasional actor. He made his name with fairy-tale films and comedies - most notably Slunce, seno, jahody and the Kameňák trilogy. His films have been among the most-watched Czech releases since the 1980s.
Ondřej Hejma is a Czech actor, voice actor and musician, best known as the frontman of the band Žlutý pes. He dubbed scores of foreign films and series, and his rapid single-voice dubs of VHS tapes became one of the defining features of the Czech video era in the 1980s and 90s.
František Fuka is a Czech film critic and one of the best-known figures from the underground home-video scene in Czechoslovakia.
