Helsinki, 1945. The end of the war brings painter Tove Jansson a sense of artistic and social freedom. While she had focused her artistic dreams on painting, the enchanting stories about creatures called the Moomins, which she told to frightened children in air raid shelters, quickly began to live their own lives and brought her international fame and financial independence. Her desire for freedom is put to the test when she meets theatre director Vivica Bandler, who ignites in her an electrifying and consuming love. But as she begins to find her artistic identity, she discovers the true love she desires to be reciprocated, and only by forging her own path can she learn to be free.
