As a result of a violent political coup that shook the Joseon dynasty, King Yi Hong-wi is deposed from the throne and sent into exile. Meanwhile, in a remote mountain village of Gwangchungol in Yeongwol, Mayor Eom Heung-do tries to secure a livelihood for his people. In hopes of revitalizing the village, he offers Cheongnyeongpo as a place of exile, believing it will bring great fortune. However, the man he welcomes is not a powerful nobleman, but the young deposed King Yi Hong-wi. Eom Heung-do, who is tasked with overseeing the exile, must watch Yi Hong-wi's every move. As the days pass, however, he increasingly fears for the boy who has lost the will to live.
