Film 8 Mile is not an autobiographical story, but it is loosely inspired by one, and the deeper connection with rapper Eminem is reinforced by the fact that Eminem embodied the main character Jimmy with surprisingly accomplished performance. It captures only a brief segment in the life of a growing boy fighting for victory in a rap competition. It is set in Detroit, where Eminem actually lived, in a desolate neighborhood of poor trailers and dilapidated houses, which is separated from the white part by a straight, infinitely long street named 8 Mile.
