Ruthless and confident gunslinger Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) and his gang of criminals and murderers ambush a mail stagecoach. Without mercy they shoot all members of the escort and steal a large sum of money. But everyone makes a mistake eventually. The feared gang leader Wade is arrested. Rancher Dan Evans (Christian Bale) has a debt he is unable to pay. For 200 dollars he joins the escort of volunteers who must transport Wade alive to trial in Yuma. Along the way both adversaries, who come from completely different worlds, try to gain each other's respect.
