History Squared: Troy

Troy has fascinated the Western world for more than three millennia - and interest in it has been reignited by the film Odyssey. What do we actually know about this ancient city, and can we today still distinguish historical facts from legends passed down through generations?

Troy was made famous primarily by the Greek poet Homer, whose very existence is uncertain. Even greater doubts surround Achilles, Hector, Agamemnon, and other heroes of the Trojan War. We know for certain where the city was located - yet it remains shrouded in mystery. However, archaeological finds, written sources, and indirect evidence allow us to glimpse the world of the Bronze Age, of which Troy was a part.

David Fronek, a secondary school history teacher and creator of the podcast History Squared, will explore myths and historical reality together with participants. The lecture takes place on 9 September 2026 at VARY&TE in Karlovy Vary.
