On the Wings of Schumann's Soul

This year marks 170 years since the death of Robert Schumann (1810-1856), a German composer and music critic. His work consists primarily of piano compositions, though he also wrote orchestral and choral music.

The Missa sacra op. 147 was composed in 1852, near the end of the composer's life. Following its performance in 1861, Clara Schumann wrote to Johannes Brahms: "The Kyrie is deeply moving, as if cast in a single mould; in the Sanctus the individual movements had such a remarkable sound that I felt chills down my spine."
