In life and in psychotherapy, we move between two extremes: either we deny the influence of family experiences and traumas on our current mental functioning, or we identify so strongly with the past that it prevents change and the development of our own identity.
This presentation describes the manifestations and motives behind both these attitudes and proposes a possible psychotherapeutic path - how to come to terms with intergenerational influences and build a personal identity.
