An elegant doctor, Ingrid (Aňa Geislerová), works in the mid-1980s at a remote provincial hospital. Exhausted by a failing marriage and stalled career, she devotes most of her time to her patients - delivering babies and terminating unwanted pregnancies. She also performs sterilizations on Romani women without ensuring they fully understand the consequences.

A new friendship with a young hospital attendant, Agáta, prompts Ingrid to see things differently and begin questioning the rules she has long unthinkingly followed.

Ivan Ostrochovský's drama opens an unresolved chapter of Czechoslovak history, when the state decided whether people could have children.
