An elegant doctor named Ingrid works in the mid-1980s at a remote provincial hospital. Trapped in an exhausted marriage and stalled career, she devotes most of her time to her patients - delivering babies and ending unwanted pregnancies. She also performs sterilizations on Romani women without their full understanding of the consequences.

A new friendship with a young orderly named Agáta prompts Ingrid to see things differently. Will she begin to question the rules she has hitherto followed without thought? Ivan Ostrochovsky's drama opens an unresolved chapter of Czechoslovak history, when the state decided who could have children.
