Doctor Moulineaux is an incorrigible liar. He hides his infidelities from his trusting wife and suspicious mother-in-law with extraordinary ingenuity - but one late return from a fling and a seemingly minor lie trigger an avalanche of ever-larger fabrications. To prevent exposure, he has no choice but to pretend he is a ladies' tailor.

The story builds on absurd mix-ups and comic situations that make Doctor Moulineaux as helpless as he is inventive. Jean-Paul Belmondo once said of this character: "A small lie is annoying, but a big lie - that is art!"
