Happy Together

There were two of them, and nothing else mattered. Then they set out on a long journey, and suddenly what was is no longer - and what is, no one wanted. On the other side of the world, in a rented room in the middle of Buenos Aires, Lai Yiu-Fai wonders what he actually wanted to be here.

The film Happy Together brought Kar-Wai Wong his first major international recognition: at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, it won the Best Director award. The story of a homosexual couple whose relationship falls apart without either of them knowing why partly shocked audiences with its openness at the time, while also captivating them with a narrative style that ostentatiously ignores any established rules.
