Eleven-year-old Rea moves with her father to a newly settled planet after a family tragedy, where he takes a job at a replication factory. She befriends Andy, and together they discover an underground world whose existence humanity never suspected.

When they find a lonely young creature of a rare species, they decide to protect it from a greedy governor who wants to exploit the animal for his own profit. Their search for the truth leads them into dangerous caves, where they uncover that reckless waste management threatens the entire hidden ecosystem.
