On the Danish island of Bornholm, trolls live deep underground according to strict rules — the most important forbids them from going to the surface, because humans are dangerous. Curious Spuntik is meant to become the next guardian of the cave and protect trolls from humans, but instead he plays pranks and flies on the backs of bats. When one day a strange rumbling is heard from the surface, he secretly sets out to discover what is happening — and unexpectedly his little sister follows him. Their expedition soon turns into an adventure in the world of humans.
