To avoid leaving his mistress alone on her birthday, he invites her to his country house - where he happens to be spending the weekend with his wife. To prevent his wife from growing suspicious, he also invites a friend, whom he passes off as the mistress's partner. But the friend has actually been the wife's lover for some time. And the wife, for her part, has hired a maid for the weekend who happens to have exactly the same name as the mistress.
