PTA et al. - Revolution on Screen

"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" - so sang poet, musician and godfather of rap Gil Scott-Heron in the early 1970s. Over the course of a single day, Kino Aero presents two films that each capture revolution on screen in their own way.

Gillo Pontecorvo, originally an Italian journalist, made The Battle of Algiers in 1966 using a pseudo-documentary method - one of the most influential political dramas of all time. The images of Algerian insurgents fighting to end French rule remain utterly gripping to this day, showing that everyone burns in the revolutionary fire.

Paul Thomas Anderson brilliantly adapted Thomas Pynchon's novel Vineland in his Inherent Vice. In a grotesquely paranoid thriller about a burned-out former white revolutionary searching across America for his kidnapped daughter while fleeing American soldiers, Scott-Heron's protest song plays in full over the closing credits - and The Battle of Algiers is required viewing here.
