An elegant physician, Ingrid, works in the mid-1980s at a remote provincial hospital. Exhausted by a failing marriage and stagnant career, she devotes most of her time to her patients - delivering babies and terminating unwanted pregnancies. She also performs sterilizations on Romani women without ensuring they fully understand the consequences.

A new friendship with Agata, a young hospital attendant, prompts Ingrid to see things differently. Will she begin to question the rules she has hitherto followed without thought? Ivan Ostrochovský's drama opens an unresolved chapter of Czechoslovak history, when the state decided whether people could have children.
