NGP 230 Years – Exhibition at the Trade Fair Palace, National Gallery Prague
Národní galerie v Praze, Prague
The National Gallery Prague celebrates 230 years since its founding with the exhibition NGP 230 Years at the Trade Fair Palace. The intimate exhibition is installed in the south wing of the 4th floor of the Trade Fair Palace as part of the existing exhibition 1796–1918: Art of the Long Century. In ten chapters (1796–1818 through 2004–2026), it offers a survey of the institution's history from 1796 to the present and contains approximately 70 works from all five collections of the National Gallery – from paintings by Renaissance and Baroque masters through works by Norbert Grund, Josef Mánes, Jakub Schikaneder, František Kupka, Pablo Picasso, Toyen and Mikuláš Medek to Michael Rittstein and Krištof Kinter. These are complemented by archival photographs and portraits of personalities who shaped the gallery – from patrons and donors to collection curators. The exhibition is curated by Veronika Hulíková, director of the Modern Art Collection at the National Gallery. The exhibition reminds us that the history of the National Gallery is a history of constant movement – during its existence, the institution repeatedly changed locations, from the Šternberg Palace through the Rudolfinum and Municipal Library to the Trade Fair Palace. The 230th anniversary of the National Gallery is commemorated throughout 2026 with a series of events: lecture cycles, guided tours, artistic performances, panel discussions and thematic interventions in the exhibitions.
