Desperado (ČSFD: 80%) is a sequel to the semi-amateur film El Mariachi by director Robert Rodriguez. Mariachi, once the best guitarist and singer on the US-Mexican border, accidentally crossed the interests of the local drug mafia: dealers killed his girlfriend and crippled his hand. In his guitar case he now carries a collection of firearms, and his only goal is revenge. The last of the dealers is the powerful and ruthless Bucho – and before the final reckoning, Mariachi must shoot his way through hordes of his henchmen.
Rodriguez shot the first film El Mariachi for seven thousand dollars – money he earned as a test subject for new drug trials, cast his friends and relatives in the roles, and directed, shot and edited the film himself. The film caught the attention of Columbia, which gave it wider distribution, and critics praised its stylish sophistication. The sequel with Antonio Banderas in the lead role was made under fully professional conditions, cost a thousand times more than the first film, and at the Cannes Film Festival it was met with enthusiasm from journalists and audiences.
