Circle of Modern Review at the Gallery of Modern Art in Hradec Králové

Galerie moderního umění v Hradci Králové, Hradec Králové

The "On the Wall" exhibition space is part of a new permanent exhibition of 20th-century Czech art and its categories, officially opened on February 21, 2026 at the Gallery of Modern Art in Hradec Králové. The exhibition was curated by Tomáš Kolich and Petra Příkazská. The "On the Wall" section focuses on styles, motifs, groups, and artists who remained outside the mainstream narrative of modern art. These works demonstrate the multi-layered character of artistic creation at the time and highlight the limits of the art-historical "sieve" through which every work must pass before becoming part of codified art history.

The first works presented in the Modern Review cycle are graphics and drawings by artists from the circle of the eponymous bibliophile journal, founded in October 1894 on the initiative of Arnošt Procházka and Jiří Karásk ze Lvovic. The journal brought together primarily authors inclined toward decadence or symbolism, and later also Catholic modernism. The exhibition features works by, for example, F. Bílka, F. Koblíha, J. Konůpek, and others. The permanent exhibition is planned for four years (until January 2030), with three of its selected sections being refreshed three times a year.

The gallery is located at Velké náměstí 139–140 in an Art Nouveau building from 1911–1912 designed by architect Osvald Polívka.
