Romeo and Juliet (1996)

In the mid-1990s, Australian director and screenwriter Baz Luhrmann had a boldly simple idea: transplant the most classical tale of ill-fated love into a modern setting, preserve Shakespeare's original dialogue, and frame the entire film as a music-video musical. Many were skeptical at the time - yet the result captured the hearts of generations precisely because of its hyperestheticized style, which paradoxically creates the perfect framework for the pathos and heightened emotions of Shakespeare's source material. The ensemble cast is anchored by then-rising stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the central roles.
The soundtrack plays a crucial role in the overall stylization, brilliantly shaping the emotional palette of each sequence. The playlist includes pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Prince, Garbage, Des'ree, and The Cardigans; music veteran Nellee Hooper contributed original compositions. Radiohead provided a balladic finale for the closing credits.
