In 1966, the BBC was the only broadcaster of popular music in Britain, and only for about half an hour a day. This led to the creation of pirate radio stations that played 24/7. To escape sanctions, they broadcast from ships anchored in the North Sea, outside British territorial waters. Their activities, however, soon attracted the attention of authorities.
