Jim, who lives unmarried with his mistress, invites his boss and his wife for a visit. However, the boss is a member of the League for Morality and disapproves of his subordinates living together "on a common-law basis". Jim must therefore find a "wife" for one evening. His mistress refuses. A picturesque cleaning lady and Jim's ambitious assistant enter the scene, and a whirlwind of misunderstandings is set in motion.
