They Call Me Lars is a tribute to the "hard-boiled detective school" – contemporary Prague replaces 1930s Los Angeles here. Private eye Lars doesn't dress in a suit like the legendary detective Phil Marlow: he's a tough guy in a leather jacket with a shaved head and a scruffy beard. After being kicked out of the police force for absolute indiscipline, he scrapes by however he can – solving clients' problems, or sometimes causing them. From his time in state service, he has only one friend left, his former partner Gold.
Gold brings him an offer for a lucrative deal: an aging real estate magnate Leo wants compromising material on his wife Dora so he can replace her with the attractive Bonnie and avoid "losing his shirt" in the divorce. He doesn't care whether the evidence of his wife's infidelity is real or fake. Lars accepts the job partly out of a sense of debt to Gold, who once saved his life.
This sets off a carousel of false seductions, real betrayals, kidnappings, and blackmail. By the end, it becomes clear who played what games with whom, who managed to outwit the others, and who escapes with only a few scratches.
