Mother

from 180 Kč · ≈ 7 €

An anti-war drama by Karel Čapek about blindness, fanaticism, and loss. The play is set in an unnamed country – the name of the mother, Dolores, and the motif of civil war allude to Spanish reality from 1936–1939. Čapek's text served as a starting point for the creators, not as a template for literal adaptation.

The production raises the question: to what extent do we experience today the story of blindness and fanaticism – not necessarily in the form of open war, but in more subtle forms of intolerance, extremism, and selfishness that divide society and deepen divisions. The play is constructed as a fatalistic drama; its weight is occasionally lightened by mischievous and ironic spirits observing human endeavour from a distance.
